- Health & Welfare LPA means your attorney (chosen person/people) can make decisions about your medical care, moving into a care home and daily routine. It can only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.
- Property and Financial Affairs LPA means your attorney (chosen person/people) can make decisions about your money and property, including managing bank accounts, paying bills, and selling property. This type of LPA can be used immediately after registration with the Office of the Public Guardian, or held in readiness until it is required.
- General powers of attorney or Ordinary powers of attorney are usually used for single transactions. These become invalid if you lose your mental capacity.

A health and welfare LPA starts when you are deemed unable to make your own decisions.
A financial LPA starts as soon as it is registered and validated by the office of The Public Guardian.
When the person who made the power of attorney passes away, the LPA ceases to exist.
If you lose what is known as mental capacity without a power of attorney, then decision-making powers pass to The Court of Protection.
The Court of Protection (COP) has the power to make decisions on finance, property, health or welfare. The court can also appoint a deputy, usually a family member or friend of the person in question. However, this can take a long time and be expensive.
